Hiking Boots Vs Hiking Shoes

Author: admin - Categories: Uncategorized

Another mild debate of the last few years in the hiking/backpacking community has been that of hiking boots vs. hiking shoes. Some don’t consider this much of a debate, as many hikers & backpackers have made the switch solely to hiking shoes, more commonly known as trail runners. Contrary to what some believe, not everyone wears hiking shoes while hiking. Hiking boots are still alive, and by no means are they outdated or obsolete, as some would have you believe. This article isn’t meant to argue either point of view, just make some basic observations between the two types of footwear.

Following are some statements made by other hikers, backpackers or writers on the subject of hiking boots vs. hiking shoes. These have been gleaned from the several other articles on the subject, as well as posts on blogs & in forums.

Hiking boots are heavier than hiking shoes.

Hiking shoes, being lighter in weight, lessen the strain on feet & legs when hiking over several miles.

Boots are constricting.

Boots normally last longer.

Boots stay wet longer than shoes.

The better ankle support which boots give is a myth.

Water enters boots more easily than shoes.

Feet are cooler in shoes.

Boots cost more than shoes.

Boots require more break-in time.

Boots are better suited for snowy conditions.

Those are just 11 quick statements I’ve read here & there over the last several years. For many it seems, no matter what, shoes win hands down. Some people hike year round in hiking shoes, that’s fine. Again, I believe this is a case of what matches up better with the terrain you’re traversing. Hiking boots are better suited, I believe, for some conditions. Hiking shoes, I also believe, provide a great advantage over boots in other situations. Here are some following observations from my point of view.

Hiking boots are heavier than shoes. I agree. Though there are varying types of materials used in hiking boots, such as full-grain leather, split leather, nubuck & synthetic, boots are on average heavier than hiking shoes. There are different types of boots made for separate conditions, and this is what needs to be considered when deciding whether or not to go with boots or shoes.

Hiking shoes, because they’re lighter, take strain off the feet, legs & back. Again, I agree. A study done many years ago by the U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine revealed that 1 lb on the foot used as much energy as carrying 6 lbs in the backpack. If this is true, then it’s obvious that hiking shoes, because of being lighter, would save wear & tear on the body.

Boots are constricting. This is something, I believe, that’s completely subject to each individual hiker. I use lightweight hiking boots on most of my hikes. They aren’t constricting on my feet.

Boots last longer. Part of me leans toward a yes, but reluctantly. Depending on the style boot, a pair of boots can last longer than a pair of shoes. Heavy leather boots built for mountaineering will outlast both lighter weight boots & shoes hands down. This type of boot can be resoled more than once, proving that the sole will wear out long before the boot itself will. I’ve seen people wear out shoes quicker than I’ve worn out boots in the same amount of time. How a person walks does much to determine the life of a boot or shoe.

Boots stay wet longer. Again, this depends on the type of boot. Heavy leather boots will take a long time to dry when severely wet. Lightweight boots which are made with fabric & nubuck leather can dry in the same given time as a pair of hiking shoes. The amount of materials in the boot or shoe & the materials themselves determine drying time.

Boots don’t give better ankle support. Depending on the type of boot, they do in fact give better ankle support. Higher-cut boots can aid in ankle support & give more leverage on uneven trails or cross-country routes.

Water enters boots more easily than shoes. This statement doesn’t make sense to me. If you’re wearing either mid-cut or high-cut boots, trekking through a few inches of water, the boot will protect your feet more than a low-cut shoe. To me, this is obvious. Coupled with a pair of gaiters, water will have a more difficult time entering your boot & getting your feet wet.

Feet are cooler in shoes. Another point I agree with. Because the amount & thickness of materials used in their construction, a hiking shoe is lighter and will be cooler to wear. If you’re hiking in an area that’s extremely dry & hot, shoes may be a better choice for you.

Boots cost more than shoes. This is generally true. Average cost of boots is anywhere from $120-170. Shoes average anywhere from $30-120. Yet compared with the lifespan of each type of footwear, it’s possible to spend less for a pair of boots than for 2-3 pair of shoes.

Boots take longer to break in. For heavy leather boots, the answer is definitely yes. Yet with the lightweight hiking boots on the market today, this characteristic is very comparable. However, I do give the edge to shoes on this.

Boots are better suited for snowy conditions. If there’s quite a bit of accumulation, yes, boots should be opted for in this situation. Yet I’ve seen & know hikers that still wear hiking shoes with a few inches of snow on the ground. If you’re just passing through an area such as this, then it’s probably not going to hinder you too much. But for winter hiking in known snow-country, I believe it’s foolish not to wear some type of hiking boots.

What it ultimately comes down to is your personal preference. There’s really no right or wrong answer to which is better to hike in, boots or shoes. It depends on you. No one can tell you which feels better on your feet, which is more comfortable, or even which will last longer. These are all subject to your hiking personality, the way you hike. Go into your local outfitter and try on several pairs of boots & shoes, then decide. Once you’ve decided, get out and put those things to work! Even if you buy something you’re not completely happy with, as long as they don’t cause you pain, just use them till it’s time for a new pair.

How To Spot A Good Used Car Just From The Ad

Author: admin - Categories: Uncategorized

When you buy a used car it can be a frustrating experience with many people feeling helpless and frustrated with no clear direction to go in. Buying a used car in a private sale will take a great deal of time but by reading into the content of the used car ad you can get a good idea as to the mentality of the seller and potentially the condition of the car as well.

Ads that are very descriptive, including pictures, and detail the vitals about the car, its previous history, as well as the past and current mechanical condition are best. By providing detailed information about the car you are more easily able to determine if the car is a potential candidate for a good deal and worth taking the time to arrange an in person inspection with the seller. You could literally spend a lifetime looking at overpriced and unreliable cars when searching for a good deal.

Identify sellers who are serious about selling their used car. A descriptive and detailed ad will tell you that this car owner is serious about selling the car and understands what information is needed in order to actually consider pursuing the car further. A used car ad should tell you the following information:

-Year of the car
-Make and model of the car
-The mileage currently on the car
-Engine size
-Transmission type (standard or automatic)
-The current mechanical condition
-Previous maintenance
and repair history
-Location of the car
-Certifications & emission test information
-Asking price
-Telephone number

Avoid wasting time by skipping poorly written car ads. Ads that include less information than this are a time waster. If you are very interested in the car, or you suspect that the car might be a good deal despite the lack of information available in the ad, you can elect to pursue the car further by contacting the seller via email or telephone.

The only real downside of chasing the seller around for more information is that you can easily find a never ending supply of used cars for sale with non descriptive ads. You are better advised to spend your time pursuing the used cars for sale in which the current owner has made a concerted effort to provide you with the pertinent details about the car already.

Used car ads that have some information but lack certain critical information like the amount of mileage the car has are likely a waste of time also. Any person who posts an ad for a used car without the mileage of the vehicle is either trying to hide something or is simply not serious about selling the car. The vehicle mileage is one, if not the most important feature of a used car and should be included in every used car ad. A great all around car with very low mileage is worth a lot of money. A great all around car with very high mileage is basically worth nothing. In almost every case where a somewhat descriptive ad for a used car exists where they do not specify mileage you will find that the car has high mileage. This is especially true with used cars being sold by dealerships as they specialize in promoting the good aspects of the car while neglecting to mention the negative aspects of the car.

Local classified newspaper ads are a great location to begin your search for a used car. Most small and local publications will have the classified section available online in addition to being in print, however many of these local publications charge for placing ads. This can help to eliminate some of the less serious sellers from testing the waters with an asking price well above the actual value of the car.

If you are going to shop from free online classified ads for a used car you will need to become very discerning about which vehicles you pursue to avoid wasting your time. Shopping from local paid classifieds that are listed online will be the best of both worlds as they are quick and easy to navigate while discouraging to sellers not motivated to sell their car.

The most popular location for used car ads is currently available online. Just ten years ago local newspapers and simply “driving around” were the best ways to shop for used cars. Now you can find hundreds of used car ads every day on online resources and classified websites like craigslist, kijiji and various buy / sell publications.

Any person who has ever sifted through the craigslist used car section knows just how much garbage is floating around on the internet. Since you can post an ad for completely free in seconds from the comfort of your own home there are many cars for sale which are well overpriced. Additionally to the convenience of these selling mediums, the fact that the ads are free encourages people to post cars for sale when they are really only testing the waters so to speak.

Free online classified car ads can be a waste of time. If you had to pay to post an ad to sell your car you would probably take more time to write the ad and determine the actual value of the car before trying to sell it. For this reason, and more, online classifieds require additional scrutiny over more traditional methods of used car shopping.

The best used deals come from motivated sellers so try to locate used car classifieds which require payment in order to place an ad. This alone will weed out the vast majority of overpriced cars being sold half heartedly by people. This will allow you to dial in on the cars which are being sold by eager sellers who are willing to part with a little money if it helps facilitate the vehicle being gone. If you can find a seller that really needs to be rid of their old car, the likelihood of getting a good deal dramatically increases.

It is not uncommon to buy a car from someone who has already bought a new car. These used car sellers are especially susceptible to low-ball offers to take the car off their hands. By contacting sellers who appear to be in a hurry to sell their used car you can increase your chances of finding someone who will take a low offer.

When you call a seller you are evaluating them not just the car. In addition to the ad itself, you can learn a great deal about a used car by speaking with the person selling the car. It takes absolutely no technical skill to be able to evaluate the motivations of a person selling a used car, however this is one of the most important things that you can do increase the likelihood of finding a good deal on a used car while mitigating the risk of buying a lemon.

You can tell how eager someone is to sell their used car by simply asking them if they are open to offers. The ideal situation is to have the seller reveal that they will accept offers as they need to get rid of the car quickly.

How to buy Digital Cameras cheap and at a large discount

Author: admin - Categories: Uncategorized - Tags: , , , ,

There is a nice fluid market for both new and after market digital cameras on eBay. Digital Camera usage has grown enormously over the past few years. Technology has reduced the old film and developing almost to the archives. Quality cameras ranging in price from well under $500 to over $2000 are available. Professionals, amateur hobbyists and regular households all seem to be acquiring cameras, often more than one per household. The question becomes how can I acquire a digital camera at the best possible price?

With a large volume of most models being traded everyday, this is the ideal efficient market. One can study the dynamics of this micro-market and determine some useful buying rules. With a little more information than the rest of the marketplace, one can almost certainly make some intelligent buying opportunities. This article focuses on how to identify these gaps and often purchase digital camera’s for 20-40% below retail.

This article should be read together with my longer piece and a web site, which produces the information required to identify buying nuggets. Find the links and URL’s to these two sites at the bottom of this article. The niche site focuses specifically and only on data from the digital camera market.

Most information on eBay focuses on the selling element, i.e. how to sell your stuff. I have tended to specialize on the buying end and trying to identify market opportunities and price in-efficiencies to really capture excellent deals. To do this we need to understand the dynamics of the eBay market place. Like any other market it is supply demand driven, and like a large flee-market if a buyer has knowledge of how many items are for sale at what prices and how many other buyers are in the market, then that buyer can capture the upper hand. Lets focus a little more on supply.

The eBay supply dynamic is a little different in that supply of an item must be seen at a point in time. In other words, because auctions end at different times, one needs to grasp the number of auctions ending in close proximity for the same item. This gives you a feel for the supply of items or in our case cameras. What makes this interesting is that today there could be a large amount of auctions ending for a particular model, but next week there could be very few. This is one element driving the price.

The demand side is slightly more complex and hidden from the average eBay buyer. This is where that the web site I refer to at the bottom has some useful data. Demand in eBay terms is measured (by sellers) as a number of factors – how many people view my auction, how many people ask questions, how many people place me on their watch page, and how many people actually bid. Obviously as we progress down this list the data become more reliable as an indication of demand. Page views are not easy to obtain, although some sellers place a publicly viewable counter on their auction pages. Questions and watchers are available to sellers, and the special web site mentioned below will expose this information. Number of bids is available for all to see.

Now if we happened to produce a graph as the auction progresses of the changes in the number of questions, watchers and bid’s one can easily see how the demand is changing as time progresses. Typically if questions are high and watchers are high, but bids are low, this may indicate some confusion and a possible buy opportunity. If watchers are very high and climbing, but bids are low, this can point to a last minute bidding war, and a stay out indicator.

Armed with this information and also a quick summary of other similar auctions ending soon, plus a quick feel for the skill set of the seller and the current highest bidder, once can see a picture very different from the average eBay buyer. Soon the trained eye will observe some nice buying opportunities. For the professional or amateur photographer this will soon bring in a number of digital camera buys that are quite a bit cheaper that retail. For example it is quite possible to find gems at 20-40% of retail prices. Lets face it, most digital camera’s perform perfectly years after acquisition. Digital electronics seldom degrade over time, so the aftermarket such as eBay is the idea place to buy camera’s cheaply.

Nintendo DS Movie Player Plays Movies and Music On Your Nintendo DS and GBA

Author: admin - Categories: Uncategorized

I’m always searching for the latest gadgets and game accessories. Be they from third party manufacturers or from the system creators themselves. But I have to admit that when I first heard about Nintendo’s Movie Player add on for the Nintendo DS, I was very surprised.

The reason for my surprise was quite simple. You see, I’ve been watching movies on my Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS, well, since their release date, with a really fantastic little accessory called the NDS / GBA Movie player.

After doing some searching on Google, I am equally surprised that more Nintendo DS (or Game Boy Advance) owners have not heard of this truly unexampled accessory for their Nintendo DS. It seems that perhaps with all the hype around the Sony PSP and it’s movie playing capabilities, we’ve all neglected to take a look at the less expensive Nintendo DS as anything other than a handheld game system.

What really made this accessory a must buy for myself, was the fact that in addition to movies, I was also able to listen to my MP3 music on my Nintendo DS too – just like Sony PSP owners can. I won’t go into the debate as to which handheld system is better, or offers more… That’s would negate the real reason for this article, which is simply to show Nintendo DS and Game Boy Advance owners that their fun little handheld game system is capable of playing all types of media files too.

The GBA/NDS Movie Player enables you to use your Nintendo DS, Game Boy Advance, Game Boy Advance SP, or Game Boy Micro to play video and audio files and read e-books from standard Compact Flash cards. And before you think that you’ll only be able to watch movie clips or short films, let me be clear in stating that you can watch an entire full length movie with the Movie Player. You can use your PC and a normal Compact Flash card reader to transfer and convert your media files to the Compact Flash cards. The included software even converts files directly from DVD to the proper movie Player format.

And before you think that it’ll take a rocket scientist to convert their DVD movie to the proper file type – think again! The software is so very easy to use, that it requires you to do nothing more than insert the DVD movie you wish to convert, or the digital file if you have it. While this is not any special format so to speak, as the UMD movie discs are for Sony PSP. You can actually take any DVD movie you own, and convert it with the included software to be played back on your Nintendo DS system. What this means is that you’re not stuck buying multiple versions of the same movie to watch that movie on the go.

One of the most common question that I’m asked is whether or not the movie player can actually store and play back a full length movie from a compact flash card. I can completely understand why this would be confusing. I mean, let’s face it, DVD movies are several GIGABYTES in size, how could these possibly fit on a small 256 Megabyte CF card.

I always answer that question with the very same answer. It can play full length movies just fine. But in case you’re wondering just how that may be possible, let me explain. It has a lot to do with the screen size of the GBA and Nintendo DS. Because the screen is much smaller, the file size of the full length movie can be much smaller too, simply because it does not have to maintain a very high resolution the same way it would if you were to watch that movie on your TV set. In essence, it “down converts” the DVD movie, to make it fit right onto the GBA or Nintendo DS screen, otherwise you would have to scrool left to right and up and down in order to see the whole video.

For those of you wondering just how how big your Compact Flash card has to be to enjoy a full movie, here’s a breakdown of the amount of video you can store on common compact flash card sizes. And I have to remind you to take into consideration that most movies are no more than 95 – 110 minutes long. This will give you a real indication of just how much you can stare on each card.

The following is a list of the amount of storage you can have on various compact flash cards. 960 minutes on a 1GB Compact Flash, 480 minutes on a 512MB Compact Flash, 240 minutes on a 256MB Compact Flash, and 120 minutes on a 128MB Compact Flash. As you can see, even a 128M compact flash card is adequate to store a full length movie.

In order to watch a movie on the GBA Movie Player, you’ll first have to use your PC to convert the DVD movie to the proper file format for the player itself. This can be done quite easily with the included software that comes with the GBA Movie Player itself. And don’t forget. You can do a whole lot more than just watch movies. You can actually listen to MP3 music, read e-books, and even load PDA type software onto the Compact Flash card which will essentially turn your Nintendo DS into a very functional PDA.

Rather than waiting for the Nintendo DS movie player, which will be released sometime next year by Nintendo themselves, I would urge all NDS owners to take a look at the GBA/NDS Movie Player. It’s packed with functions and features, and has a price that simply can’t be beat. Even when adding up the cost of a Nintendo DS and the Movie Player, you’ll find that you’re still at par, or cheaper than most good quality portable DVD players.

And let’s face it, you simply can’t put a portable DVD player in your pocket, or have it play the latest Mario game either.

Press Kit Strategies for Singers & Musicians

Author: admin - Categories: Uncategorized - Tags: , , , ,

The main goal in creating a press kit is to generate interest in an artist and the music they play. A press kit includes background information, photos, samples of music, a listing of past and future gigs you have scheduled, and any other pertinent information. A press kit is used as a way of introducing and artist to newspapers, the media, promoters, and music industry leaders. You can create a press kit that is mailed to the appropriate recipients and it is a good idea to have an electronic form of your press kit that can be emailed and posted on web sites.

Things to include in your press kit:

Offer a limited a mount of information about yourself, your band, and your style of music. Don’t give the reader more information than they want. If your introduction is too lengthy, you will lose the interest of your intended audience.

Talk about your music, the way in which you perform your songs, your sound, and who your influences are. You will want to give a good idea of what you may sound like in these descriptions. Do not be afraid to interject a little humor into your descriptions. You will get someone’s attention during the very first minute they open your press kit. If you do not captivate them immediately, they will lose interest.

Describe the things that make you special in comparison to everyone else. What are your skills and experience level? Why would a record promoter or executive gain by giving you a chance to record and market your music? Record companies spend a great deal of money in promoting new artists. You will want to make it clear why you would be a good investment.

Include press clippings and quotes as they become available. A remark made about you by a reputable person will go a long way in making your press kit credible. This will let the reader know that you have been recognized as a talent to be reckoned with and could possibly create extra momentum for you while you are trying to launch your career. Whether you are in need of a singer, musician, or actor press kit, recognition from others is a great tool in promoting yourself.

You really only need one page of your press kit to be devoted to a biography and one page that includes quotes and press clippings. This rule stands even in an online portfolio. By keeping each topic on a simple page, you are much more likely to hold the interest of the person who receives your press kit. Make sure the tone of your band press kit is in line with who you are as a person and the type of music you perform.

A sample of your music in the form of a high quality CD or clips that can be heard in an electronic press kit are critical. Make certain you label the CD with your name and contact information. If someone loves your music but has misplaced the rest of your press kit, you will want this information to readily available to them.

Be careful not to overdo the self-promotion. You should be positive and state your ambitions, but shameless self-promotion will make you look unprofessional and less than credible. Also avoid including too much personal information. No one cares (yet) about your first pet, your grades in elementary school, or your personal phobias. Keep the focus on your music and your accomplishments. You want to be sure you do not look desperate for work, even if you really are.

Include a personal cover letter to whomever you send your press kit to, and try to avoid sending your musician press kit unsolicited. It is always better to have a referral from a friend or associate of the person you wish to see your material.

Making Money On A Site That Bombs

Author: admin - Categories: Uncategorized - Tags: , , , , , , , , ,

You spend a lot of time and effort to build out and market a site. You are getting a lot of traffic, but the site isnt profitable. What now??

Making Money On A Site That Bombs

There is a nasty little secret related to Internet businesses that most people either do not want to know or simply ignore. The secret is that some businesses are just not going to be profitable on the web. There can be a variety of reasons, but the simple fact is all the traffic in the world may not make your site profitable. This brings up the issue that should be discussed at the beginning of the process, but rarely is.

Should every business have a site? Yes. Should every business go hog wild trying to market their site on the web? No. A fundamental question that must be considered at the beginning of site planning is whether the site should be active or passive. Active sites are designed to be profitable in and of themselves. Passive sites are designed to simply create an online presence for the convenience of customers a digital business card if you will with directions, phone numbers and so on.

For example, the site for an artist is typically going to be a passive site. People usually do not search for random art. They search by an artists name. Paying for marketing, thus, makes little sense. Instead, the best option is typically to put up a site emphasizing the artists name and showing his or her work. If a proactive effort is desired, listing the art on EBay is probably the best option.

Regardless of the path you take, nothing is worse than finding out your site is bombing. Despite your best efforts, there simply seems to be no way to make a profit. Perhaps Google has opened a similar service and you are getting stomped. Perhaps people simply do not buy online what you are selling. Alas, there are a couple of steps you can take to try to rescue something from the situation.

The first step is to consider repositioning your site. Instead of trying to sell something, you can always become an information site. Essentially, you drop the sales pitches and just offer useful information. When you take this approach, people tend to start returning to your site when they need more information, to wit, you get the much cherished return visitors. If you become a credible resource, you may be able to save the day.

If you convert to an information site, the second step is to make some money from it. If you have decent, free traffic coming to the site from search engine rankings, you should give some thought to Google Adsense. Adsense is a program whereby you put ads from Google Adwords advertisers on your site. When someone clicks the ads, Google gives you a share of the bid price. If you have a couple thousand visitors a day, you can make some decent money. In fact, many people are shocked at just how much they make.

At the end of the day, you really havent lived until you have built a site that bombs. Instead of heading to the window ledge, take a deep breath and consider your options. Google Adsense is one way to pick up the scraps and recover some of your investment. Over time, you should be able to make back your money and more.

What To Do In Case of Burns

Author: admin - Categories: Uncategorized - Tags:

By definition, a burn may be an injury caused by heat, cold, electricity, chemicals, friction, or radiation. In a recent study done in the United States, approximately 2.4 million burn injuries are reported each year. And surprisingly, around eight thousand to twelve thousand burn victims die, and close to one million patients will sustain substantial or permanent disability secondary to their burn injury. Burn injuries cut a close second place to motor-vehicle accidents as one of the leading cause of accidental deaths in the United States.

Salgado Investigations was founded by Jorge Salgado in early 2006, the company is based in Croydon South London. I asked Jorge how he first got into the world of private investigation. He informed me, he was a bit of a rebel in his younger days, he started off his working life with a short stint at his local Cinema. This was followed by finding work as a security guard; Jorge quickly found his feet in this line of work and progressed to become a store detective. Jorge continued to distinguish himself from his peers and moved up the chain to becoming a retail undercover investigator at Heathrow Airport and later was appointed as the security manager at WH Smiths.

Advice to Parents on Childhood Measles – Part II

Author: admin - Categories: Uncategorized - Tags: , ,

Copyright 2006 Peter Nisbet

In Part 1 I explained how a lack of knowledge about measles symptoms and resistance to MMR has resulted in some parents starting up measles parties to ensure that their children caught measles early and so gain immunity that way. This is mistaken in my view and many people are unaware that measles is still a major killer. In part II I will explain to parents what the measles symptoms are, in what order they should appear and when to call a doctor.

As a parent you should learn how to recognise measles symptoms. If your child has had the disease, or is immunized, you probably dont need to know this, but if not you could save a life by being aware of the most important measles symptoms and when to get medical help. Back in the 1950s and 60s they all knew measles symptoms when they saw the, but not now, so lets try to spot the them in the rough order in which they normally appear. Its not easy since many childhood infections have similar symptoms. However, they all have at least one which is particular to that disease.

Measles symptoms:

Measles frequently start with symptoms similar to those of a cold or the flu.

1. First a runny nose and a sniffle, followed by a sore throat.. A typical barking cough can then develop. So far, you would not think measles The eyes will puff up, may become watery and get red and sore looking. If you know of a possible measles contact you can now get suspicious.

2. A slight increase in temperature will develop, and will increase to around 39 Celsius (102F). The child may shy away from the light or close her eyes when a light is switched on. At this point you may want to call a doctor. If so, you will catch the disease early, but the symptoms are not yet definitely indicative of measles. Most parents will still regard these symptoms as a bit of a cold or a touch of the flu.

3. You may not notice this, but about 2 to 3 days after the first symptoms appear, your child will get small spots on the inside of the cheek, round about the molars, called Kopliks Spots. These look like small red bumps with tiny grains of sand or salt in the middle. These may last less than a day and sometimes even appear within the first 36 hours. If you are with it and aware, you will see this, and you should call your doctor at this stage. This the definitive measles symptom. No other infection shows Koplik’s spots. These spots disappear as the main rash appears. They are photographed on my website.

5. The temperature will probably have reduced a bit by now to 37 38C (just at or below 100F). You think perhaps she is getting better.

6. The main rash starts to appear about 1 or 2 days after the Kopliks spots. It forms small spots which join together to form blotches. Definitely doctor time! There is a picture of a measles rash on my website.

7. The rash appears on the forehead around the hairline first, then to the neck, body, arms and legs. By this time you will have called a doctor and your child is diagnosed with measles unless you have an inexperienced doctor, when samples may be taken to identify the virus.

8. The temperature increases again to over 40C or higher (105F). No need for samples now – if the Koplik’s spots were missed, this is definitely measles, but by now it is dying out.

9. The rash lasts about 4 days then starts to disappear from the head down. The whole process, from start of symptoms to disappearance of the rash, takes about 10 days on average. The rash itself last about 6 days.

A person with measles is infectious from 4 days before the rash appears to about 4 days after it has appeared, so it can be passed around before any measles symptoms show.

Those most at risk are:

Young children under one year old. Malnourished people. Children who have depressed immune systems, such as those on some cancer treatments or are infected with HIV or AIDS. Children suffering from a Vitamin A deficiency. Pregnant women: the infection can cause miscarriage or premature delivery.

It is said that a doctors surgery can be a dangerous place. Measles is extremely contagious, and around 90% of close proximity contacts will catch the disease. If any of the above high risk patients are present in the surgery waiting room when you take your child suspected of having measles, you may be placing them at special risk.

Doctors may not like this, but for this reason alone I suggest that you call a doctor rather than take a child suspected of having measles to the surgery. This is another argument against those who would rather have their child catch measles at a measles party than be given a vaccination to prevent them from contracting it.

Baby Boomers: Get a Boost with an Anti-Aging Supplement

Author: admin - Categories: Uncategorized - Tags: , , , , , , , ,

There’s little doubt that we Baby Boomers are in a bit of a quandary. We may not feel like we’re getting older, but the mirror tells us otherwise. Some of us have retired, while others of us are looking forward to the day when we close our office door and walk out of the building for the last time. All of the evidence suggests that we’ll live at least another quarter of a century after retirement, and most of us have plans for living life to the fullest. We’ll be traveling, volunteering, and enjoying our grandchildren. We’ll also follow our passions, which may lead us down a path of exploring new hobbies, starting a new business, or taking on a part-time job on our own terms. The linchpin to all of our dreams and aspirations, though, is our ability to stay healthy and fit. That’s why an anti-aging supplement is high on the “must have” list of most Baby Boomers.

An Eagles Eye View Of Chicken Allergy

Author: admin - Categories: Uncategorized - Tags:

Lisa was at a birthday party of one of her dear officemates. She has not been fond of attending parties at her age, which is 23. As a child, she was not really into attending parties even of her friends, neighbors and relatives.

No, dont get it wrong. It is not that Lisa is virtually and practically not sociable. She is very friendly and very outgoing. Lisa admits that she has been afraid of attending parties, especially childrens parties when she was still a kid.

Lisa has a deep dark secret. Dont get it wrong again. This girl is not a character to judge. Lisa has chicken allergy. It means she can never take in chicken meat because adverse reactions occur in her body whenever she does that.

So that explains why she was not fond of parties, especially when she was just a kid. Most children parties cater or serve fast foods and one of the most popular food served is chicken meat.

It is because more people prefer chicken meat than any other because it is considered to have less fat.. Besides, it is one of the more flexible edible meat around.

Chicken allergy

If you have the symptoms that would be described later, then, you are positive to have chicken allergy. Take note that allergy to chicken is somehow similar to allergy to other meat.

Just like there are people allergic to pork and beef, there are also people allergic to chicken meat. Some people, however, are allergic to chicken but are not allergic to chicken eggs. There are those, on the other hand, that are allergic to both.

In the United States, statistics have it that about 0.6% to 5% of overall reported food allergies annually are chicken meat allergy.

Manifestations of chicken meat allergy

Among the most common and prevalent manifestation or symptom of chicken allergy are frequent infections like ear infections and bladder infections; asthma attack; bed-wetting; eczema; skin rashes; acne; unusual fatigue; insomnia; migraine; depression and chronic disturbance in the gastrointestinal system.

Some people with chicken allergy even develop sinusitis which is somehow unusual if they dont really have the history. Hives and joint pains are also prevalent to them.

Symptoms of chicken meat allergy occur or show up after several minutes of in take. To some people, the reaction could surface in as fast as at least ten minutes, while in others it can be as slow and prolonged to take up to 24 to 48 hours.

Treatment and prevention of chicken allergy

Chicken meat contains allergens or allergy-producing substances that are called purines. These substances are mainly cited for the onset of several other diseases like gout. Gouts are characterized by the formation or onset of kidney stones.

Purines in chicken meat may lead to excessive uric acid accumulation in the body that can possibly lead to what is called kidney stones.

Thus, if chicken allergy symptoms show up, it is important to immediately consult or seek your doctors help. That would prevent further ailments or disease from coming out.

The doctor will have to prescribe several medications to treat or help curtail chicken allergy.

The best prevention would be to avoid eating chicken meat. Allergies to substances, you should remember, is not curable but only treatable.

There are a lot of other meat that could taste better than chicken meat, right?

Is An Ebusiness Right For You

Author: admin - Categories: Uncategorized - Tags: , , , , , , , ,

You need to make some money. Perhaps you’d like to change careers. Maybe you’d like a new challenge. Or you’ve just heard the rumors about the fortunes to be made on the internet.

Any one of these reasons might have led you to the decision to start your own internet business, but before you begin investing your time and money there are some important questions you need to answer to determine if an ebusiness is right for you.

First you should consider your familiarity and ease with the internet. If you don’t know about negotiate the web or attempting to do makes you uncomfortable then this alone does not mean you should rethink starting an ebusiness. However it does mean that you need to spend time learning about how the internet works and getting familiar with basic tools such as email, web browsers, message boards, and search engines. If your discomfort was a simple result of ignorance then don’t worry about it as you can acquire the knowledge and skills you need. However if you find that you simply don’t like it even after you become familiar then that should be a red flag to consider another career path.

Second you should consider your business knowledge and experience and then consider how that works for you or against you in the world of ecommerce. A simple lack of knowledge and experience simply means that you will need to spend time learning or filling in the gaps in your knowledge. The good news is that this information is readily available on the internet. Of course the bad news is that if you leap into business before you are ready it can cost you a lot of time and money. My advice is to read articles and ebooks to acquire a basic foundation then begin spending time in some online forums and ask questions. People are always willing to help. Don’t spend any money while building this foundation knowledge. You don’t have to so why do it? Latter on as you begin to delve deeper into your niche then you may decide that some information is worth paying for but hopefully by then you’ll be a better judge. However you may discover during your studies that ecommerce bores you or confuses you. Again, that should be a red flag to consider another career path.

Third what need will your ebusiness fill? Obviously you have needs but that is not what I’m talking about. Think about your potential audience or customer. Start searching for other products that might compete with yours or other businesses that already exist. Visit forums, subscribe to newsletters, and study web sites that relate to this field. Eventually you will be able to determine if there is a need for your ebusiness, how big a demand exists, and how much competition is already in place. It is important to consider these angles because each fact will help determine how easy it will be to establish your new business, grow that business, and ensure its success. You can make a success in a highly competitive field but it is more work than finding yourself in a smaller, yet unexplored, niche.

So You Want To Teach As A Private Music Tutor?

Author: admin - Categories: Uncategorized - Tags: , , , , , , ,

An Introduction for Musicians

For many of today’s musicians, working as a private music tutor has many benefits over working within an educational establishment. Firstly, you are a lot freer to choose where, when, and depending on how well you teach, WHO your students are. This will also let you continue whatever employment or other commitments you already have. Building up your student base slowly allows you to commit time to each of them to find out their learning style and prepare for their lessons without feeling overwhelemed suddenly with 30 new students starting next week.

Starting out, the idea of being an “expert” can feel rather daunting especially for those of us who learned by gigging, and may not be the best sight-readers. Others among us have studied music and/or education to higher levels. But no matter where you stand between these two, those first few steps into teaching music as an income is terrifying.

Two main advantages I have seen in my time working as a private music tutor are

1. You have a lot more potential to work the hours you choose, and where you choose. Allowing your other commitments time where they need it.

2. If you teach children, generally, they are far more likely to behave and be responsive to teaching when either on their own as there is no one to show off to. School music lessons – especially in junior high school can be pretty hard to control.

3. You can vary the genres and methods you use as you see fit, not as a strict school curriculum requires.

4. You can focus all your attention on one student who WANTS to learn if they don’t, why are you teaching them – your morale will take a huge blow, and your time would be better invested in working with an interested student.

Monetary benefits will come into the equation somewhere let’s face it; they have to in this world. However, if all you can see are pound signs and have no real interest to teach, work with others, or enjoy music perhaps private tuition is not for you.

In my personal opinion, private teachers can make a very comfortable living, and with some commitment and effort can easily make 40 upwards per hour.

It is not unheard of for tutors to have a waiting list of students who want them as their tutor. Once you find yourself in this position, although it isn’t time to relax, it is most definitely time to congratulate yourself. You can now (within reason) charge what you REALLY feel you are worth per lesson/hour, as you have people desperately waiting for your time.

If you didn’t increase your price at this stage it would be foolish. You have developed a product (your tuition service) that is in such a need the demand out numbers the supply – the number of lessons you have available per week.

Building your “studio” into this size is an achievable target, but one not as many as could reach it actually do. Those who do are employing valuable marketing techniques whether they realise it or not.

One of these marketing techniques is so subtle, many don’t even realise they are doing it when they are advertising in their local newspaper or shop window. This is a basic example, but stick with me; this idea can be applied at any time in your teaching career. By advertising in a local newspaper, you are already targeting the first most likely people to use your tuition services your local community. Unless you are famous for being an incredible musician, people will neither just ask if you would teach them, or travel to find you in the hope you teach music. This one simple ad is telling the local community “I live in this area, and I have spaces available to teach music lessons.” I would save the expense and time on that website until further down the line if you live in a small town, the paper would provide a far higher return on income when you are starting off.

To develop this further, think what your ads say about you? Do they say professional, or do they say “I can play a few tunes on the piano, let me teach you cos I really need the money”

Here are my top 5 mostly marketing techniques for musicians aspiring to earn a decent income from private tuition.

1. Choose a name for your “studio” this can be anything from “Maria’s Singing Tuition” to “Bass riff School”. Choose one and use it in ALL your advertising

2. Make sure you include contact details on everything – advertising is an obvious one, but what about your pupils’ notebooks in case they ever need to cancel a lesson?

3. Make at least two copies of your teaching schedule. One that stays with you (especially if you are as forgetful as me), and one that everyone else in your household can see. This allows them to know when not to disturb you, or when you’ll be home.

(A third copy is ideal to keep with your musical instrument as a reference.)

4. Make sure that the two copies in point 3 have contact names and numbers for all your students. Should you ever have an emergency, this allows all your pupils to be contacted by another person in your family should you not be able to attend.

5. Don’t be afraid to tell people that you teach music – especially if you have spaces available. Word of mouth is the best form of advertising, and when you combine this with the power of NETWORKING, you can only succeed.

Balloon Bouquets – For That One Special Occasion

Author: admin - Categories: Uncategorized - Tags: ,

Be it birthday, Christmas, New Year or Valentine’s Day – balloons add color and joy to all fun occasions. And there is no better way to send greetings to your friends and family by sending them a bunch of balloons right at their doorstep.

Balloon delivery has gained popularity over the years and, if legend is to be believed, had its humble beginnings not very many years ago. In the year 1976, Joe DelVechhio thought of the idea of delivering balloons in bunches and opened Balloon Bouquets of Washington, DC. And this is how the delivery of helium-filled balloons started.

Balloon delivery is a great way to surprise your girlfriend on the morning of her birthday or to let your boss know how much you care so that he remembers that your raise is due. Balloons have been a favorite with the kids since the time balloons were invented. Buy ordering a bunch of balloons you can add joy to their lives on birthdays and Christmas. Balloons come in different shapes, sizes and colors. Life size bear balloons are popular amongst the kids. There are also heart-shaped balloons of different sizes to woe your girlfriend.

Balloons with personal messages written on them are also a good idea. Many people send balloons with the same message written on each of them. Be creative with your messages so that the receiver finds extra joy reading all of them. Also include many bright colors in a bunch to add life. You can go that extra mile and order decorative balloons for different occasions. Many balloon delivery services have expertise in making flower bouquets or Christmas trees out of balloons. It is also a good idea to turn your house into a balloon zoo with animals made out of balloons.

You can also make arrangements for balloon magicians along with your bouquet of balloons. They turn balloons into animals and toys right in front of your eyes in no time. Cars, tigers, giraffes or poodles – you name it and you get it.

Often balloon deliveries can be a good alternative for sending flowers. Flowers sent during the morning will wear out by evening. But your balloons will remain as fresh and colorful even the next day. Balloon delivery is also a low-cost option compared to flowers and has a larger than life visual effect. While ordering your bouquet make sure that they reach the right place at the right time.

For the last 60 years auto recyclers, otherwise known as auto wreckers or auto dismantlers with their junkyards and salvage yards, have played an important role in the economy and environment. Brief History of Birth Control

Recent studies show that out of the eight most common reasons for people having sexual intercourse, getting pregnant is always the last. It seems that even if human being are biologically wired to be sexually aroused to ensure reproduction of the species, bearing children places a distant second to pleasure when it comes to sexual motivation. Ever since history began, men and women have always wanted to be the ones deciding on whether or not to have a child. Contraceptives were used in one method or another for thousands of years throughout human history. In fact, family planning has always been practiced even in societies that are dominated by political, social, and religious codes that require people to become fruitful and multiply.

Tools Women Can Use to Impress Their Auto Technician

Author: admin - Categories: Uncategorized - Tags:

Trust, reliability and good communication are not just key ingredients to a healthy and successful relationship with your significant other. They are also instrumental to a balanced and sound relationship with your automobile and its technician.

At some point in a vehicle’s life, most women will have to take their automobile to a repair shop because it has, unfortunately, let them down.

AAA, North America’s largest motoring and leisure travel organization, is helping women motorists jump-start their awareness in automotive maintenance with a checklist they can use to boost their car care confidence and automotive self-reliance.

“If women put off visiting an auto repair shop because of fear, it could be a recipe for disaster,” said John Nielson, director of AAA’s Approved Auto Repair program. “The more you know about your vehicle and how it operates, the better.”

AAA offers the following tips for women:

* Become familiar with your automobile’s maintenance schedule. This information is provided in the owner’s manual of your vehicle.

* Don’t wait for your car to break down to identify a repair shop. Be proactive and research where you want to take your vehicle when it’s time to be serviced.

* Gather recommendations and opinions from friends and family about auto repair shops. This will help streamline the decision-making process.

* Check with local consumer agencies to identify if the repair shop in question has any unresolved disputes.

* Find out if the shop employs ASE certified automotive technicians that are experienced working on the type of car you own.

* Select an AAA Approved Auto Repair facility. These shops undergo an extensive investigation before being allowed to enter the program and AAA is confident that they will provide competent and professional repairs.

* Communicate your vehicle’s symptoms effectively by using simple everyday language or demonstrating the problem during a test drive with the technician.
